At the age of 17 I was given the opportunity at my high school of taking car driving lessons. It was a very small class and it was meant to prepare young drivers to take the driving test and get a license. Being the youngest in my family no one had ever bothered to take the time to teach me how to drive so for me, these car driving lessons came as a real treat. I began the class and was very excited to learn to drive and prepare myself for my license, and I was going to do this all with out the help of anyone in my family, which made me feel really independent.

The car driving lessons were held in the small building next to the gym. My school was not very high tech so we just had some simple videos and a lot of reading to do. Once we understood the basics of driving we would get to do some actually driving in the old car the school had for just that purpose. When I took my car driving lessons in the car I remember thinking the motor was going to blow, it made so much noise and the engine sputtered but somehow it kept on going.

Later that year after passing my driving test my mom signed me up with the family’s insurance group and they all chipped in to buy mea car that was just as old as the one the school had. I was so proud of myself for having gotten my license that it did not matter one bit that my car was old and shabby, I rode around town like I was driving a Mercedes G Wagon. My family also was very proud of me, usually they are so busy no one even remembers me but my getting my license on my own made them sit up and take notice.

Now when I go back to visit my family I like to drive by the high school and pass by my old driving class. Now they have a newer car and even some virtual equipment that helps students feel as if they are driving when they are not. Even with all these advancement I would not trade them infor my classesand the old car that I learned in. That class room changed my life and I will always owe my school for having shown my family that I too could achieve something.
