Having skipped most of my school lessons I had no qualifications and when it came to getting a job, I struggled to pass any interviews and felt stupid when my kids asked a question and I couldn't answer it. How can you encourage your kids to get a good education when you couldn't help them yourself.

I didn't want to go to college and sit with other students as I felt quitenervous and I didn't want the kids to know, but I had heard about lessons that you could do online. Finding the website was proving more difficult than I thought as I struggled with my spelling but I asked for a little bit of help and together we found a website that you could learn basic skills on. All of the lessons were broken down into easy sections and at the end of each section you did an online test as well as a written one. All I needed to do was pass.

The first online test was so hard I thought I might as well give up now, but then I looked at my children doing their homework and thought I want to be able to help you so I persevered with it. I worked very hard each night after the kids had gone to bed. My final online test would be marked instantly and I would know if I had a pass or fail for the entire course.

Waiting for the result to come up seemed to take forever, but, there it was, a big fat PASS right across the screen. I was so excited I could have cried but I am a man and men don't cry.

After passing this course, I enrolled on an evening college course to further improve my skills and I also applied for a job with a skiphire company. It was not really what I wanted to do, but it was a job and I passed the interview and they employed me. This was a big achievement in my books as I had never had a job.

I enjoyed my job, but wanted to do the office side of it rather than the manual side. My boss gave me a chance and I took to it with great enthusiasm. I love my job, my college course and most of all my kids.
